James Irvine Foundation - Creative Connections Fund

The Creative Connections Fund supports the expansion of diverse, relevant arts and cultural offerings in local communities across California. The fund targets small and midsize arts organizations and offers project grants of up to $50,000, over a maximum of two years, through an open, competitive review process.

The Creative Connections Fund aims to support small and midsize arts organizations because they play an important role in the arts ecosystem. They have close ties to their communities, present aesthetics that have particular relevance to their audiences, and involve local artists. These smaller organizations support local creativity and add to the cultural vibrancy of their neighborhoods and cities and, ultimately, the state.

Most of our Arts grants are the result of invited proposals from organizations with annual budgets greater than $2 million, many of whom are long-term Irvine partners. The Creative Connections Fund is an important complement to our invitational portfolio and a way to reach smaller arts organizations of all artistic disciplines and aesthetics through an open process.

By Joanne Fritz, About.com Guide

In his keynote address at the conference, Craver said that, during these difficult times, we should focus our resources on our organization's "missionaries," "loyalists," and "lapsed donors."

Missionaries are those folks who believe fervently in our cause, donate frequently, volunteer eagerly, and who enthusiastically share their passion with others. Craver pointed out that:

Grants for Artists - Visions from the New California DUE: Thursday May 20th 2010

The Project

Six artist residency programs, organized by the Alliance of Artists Communities and supported by The James Irvine Foundation, set out to describe a changing California through the lens of its artists, and to answer the questions: What does California look like to its artists? How can the organizations that support today’s artists nurture and sustain diverse visions?

Visions from the New California celebrates, supports and promotes the work of outstanding California visual artists from diverse communities — artists whose work may as yet be unfamiliar but whose compelling visions will define California in its next decades. The project also aims to introduce the artists and their communities to the opportunities for support available through artist residency programs.
